Chippa United will be hoping to match their best ever start to a DStv Premiership season when they travel to Royal AM on Sunday having traditionally battled at the start of the campaign.
The Chilli Boyz have four points from their opening two games, a 1-0 win at newly-promoted Sekhukhune United and a 0-0 home draw with Mamelodi Sundowns.
New coach Gavin Hunt has made them difficult to beat, even if they are still trying to find their form in front of goal, and will be hopeful of another positive result at Royal AM.
Only once before have Chippa secured more than four points from their opening three games, which was after a fine start to the 2016-17 season when they beat Free State Stars (2-1), drew with SuperSport United (0-0) and then beat Baroka FC (4-1).
It all went downhill after that though and the team only won another four games in their remaining 27 league fixtures and survived being forced into the relegation play-offs on goal-difference alone.
Hunt and his side can match those seven points with a win at Royal AM, while a draw would still make it their outright second best start in their nine seasons as a top-flight team. Even a loss and they have already matched their current record second-best starts of four points after three games in 2015-16 and 2020-21.
That 2016-17 season was also Chippa’s longest unbeaten run at the start of a league campaign – three games. After Royal AM on Sunday they will host Orlando Pirates on September 18.
If you include the tail-end of last season, Chippa are unbeaten in six games.
