Mamelodi Sundowns issue official apology to Al Ahly after fans behaviour

South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns have issued an official apology to Al Ahly after their fans attacked the team’s bus and directed insults to former coach Pitso Mosimane.

Ahly held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, after having won 2-0 in the first leg.

This result meant that the the Red Devils became the first African team to reach this stage of the tournament on 17 occasions, with their closest rival being DR Congo’s TP Mazembe with 13 appearances.

As they approached the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium before the game, Al Ahly’s team bus was met by a group of angry Mamelodi Sundowns fans that weren’t allowing them to go through.

The supporters held a number of banners insulting their former coach, Pitso Mosimane, and repeated abusive chants towards the man that led to more than 10 domestic and continental titles.

24 hours after the incident, the Sundowns board reprehended these actions and issued an official apology to their Egyptian counterpart.

In their statement, they confirmed that an investigation will be held to identify the culprits and will take all necessary actions against them.

Al Ahly are now set to face Esperance Sportive de Tunis the semis, the team that knocked-out their arch rivals, Zamalek, in the group stage.

Before that, they will travel to Qatar, where they are scheduled to face CAF Confederation Cup champions RS Berkane in the CAF Super Cup next Friday, May 28 at 18:00 GMT+2.
