Swallows FC were held to a 0-0 draw by Stellenbosch FC in a 2020-21 DStv Premiership match at the Dobsonville Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
The result saw the Beautiful Birds set a new PSL record for the most draws in a single season, as it was their 18th stalemate this term. The result leaves them in fifth on the league standings. Stellies remain in 14th spot on the standings – a point above the relegation zone with two matches to save their Premiership status.
The Dube Birds started the match brightly and threatened first through Kagiso Malinga, who netted his maiden top-flight goal against Kaizer Chiefs last week.Lebohang Mokoena delivered a quality cross for Malinga, who connected with the ball, but he failed to keep his header on target just 13 minutes into the encounter.
Fawaaz Basadien thought he had handed Swallows the lead when he found the back of the net in the 27th minute, after Kamohelo Mahlatsi had hit the woodwork, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
Stellies grew in confidence after the half-hour mark and they came close to scoring on the stroke of half-time after some good work by Deano Van Rooyen. The 24-year-old attacker delivered a pin-point cross for Ashley Du Preez, whose volleyed effort was brilliantly saved by Swallows goalkeeper Sanele Tshabalala.
Stellies surged forward in numbers after the restart as they searched for the opening goal with Du Preez keeping the Beautiful Birds’ defence busy with his blistering speed.
Swallows head coach Brandon Truter decided to make a triple substitution on the hour mark as he introduced Kgaogelo Sekgota, Zaphaniah Mbokoma and Ruzaigh Gamildien.
Tshabalala was called into action in the 75th minute and the Kaizer Chiefs academy product denied Stellies striker Stanley Dimgba as the visitors searched for a late winning goal.
The hosts also had their chances in the closing stages of the match, but they could not trouble Stellenbosch keeper Lee Langeveldt and ultimately, the game ended in a 0-0 stalemate.
